Vitamin D benefits MS: A closer look at the genetic evidence
Vitamin D benefits MS: A closer look at the genetic evidence
This is important! Most folks are still afraid to take enough, because it is a
fat soluble vitamin. One fact I know myself: there is a better (higher) chance
for it not to progress than there is with the conventional medication!
Liquid vitamin D taken with another fatty (food) source will help absorb it
better than just popping a pill. In Canada, we are too far away from the
equator to make enough from sunshine, so we must supplement.
I recently just started back with Cod Liver Oil, to get sufficient vitamin A with
the vitamin D, and I use a digestive enzyme with lipase and Ox Bile, since ma
body seems to have trouble digesting fats.

My European experience of Spring 2010
This happened 3 years ago in April, but the memories keep
returning every Spring! My mind is still bathed in colors, flowers, street
music, lakes and meadows, trains and cute, but fast small cars, bicycles and
tasty food. As a female in my second
fifty with a number of physical challenges, I got used to public transportation
again for the first time in about 25 years!
The idea of a Spring holiday was to avoid the heat and the
crowds while paying less money for the trip. At the same time, I met up with my
favorite man who was exploring Europe already when I arrived. The basic route for our train trip was to go
to Venice (after a few days of Switzerland with my sister and family for
Easter) for at least 3 days, then to the Cinque Terre via Florence and Pisa,
and visit a special friend in southern France before heading back to western
Switzerland.
My relatives greeted me with a pair of modern hiking poles to
help support my weak legs while traveling. Using them helped the busy Italians
be more compassionate, so quite often someone gave up their seat for me on the
crowded waterbus in Venice, or let me use a washroom where nobody else was
allowed to do so! (Or was it the desperate expression on my face??) In Venice,
there were only 2 public washrooms marked on the city map. The cost was 1 to 2
euro to use the facilities, but as I learned, this didn’t guarantee toilet
paper or soap…. This gave me a real reason not to drink any coffee in Venice!
People seemed to be used to tourists there, and they often
answered back in English when I tried my best to speak Italian…. L
Instead of spending a fortune on eating in restaurants, it
was spent for an unforgettable ride in one of the many gondolas cruising the
Grande Canale and many small canals. The friendly “Gondolieri” explained some
history about Venice and its buildings as well as singing a couple of the
typical Italian songs, as per my request. One gondola that passed us even had
an accordion player on board, which heightened my excitement instantly, because
it reminded me of my dad.
The camera was aimed at everything and everyone, including
the colorful laundry hanging over the window sills, the flowers and the
buildings.
Travel was much easier for me on the west coast of northern
Italy, the Cinque Terre, just north of Pisa. We went to see the leaning tower
of Pisa and had a typical Italian dinner at one of those sidewalk restaurants.
A bottle of wine was a lot cheaper than 2 glasses, so we dared each other to
finish that bottle while the tower seemed to lean a bit more each half hour. J
People were a lot friendlier and the washrooms were easier to
find. When it was necessary, I would buy a cappuccino to get to a washroom, but
to my surprise, they were mostly without the seat! Oh well, live and learn.
The food was more reasonably priced than in Venice, and the
breakfast was often included in the hotel price. Other than the delicious crusty
Pizzas, the Gnocchi with pesto sauce and the sword fish were the most
enjoyable. A glass of local wine was a special treat to go with a meal. One “Pensione”
in Vernazza even decorated the coffee and tea with edible flower pedals! The
culture is so rich from the existence of many hundred years and even the trees look
more defined then here. It was a definite joy to witness the blooming of all
the plants and trees, because the climate was many weeks ahead of a spring in
Alberta!
Arriving in Nice (France) just in time before the French
train strike started was more than good luck. I enjoyed the viewpoints and
markets as much as the historic old buildings and churches (one of them had the
same name as my mother). I surprised myself at conversing in French, which I
haven’t done for over 30 years. Another amazing experience was the flight from
Nice to Geneva over the snow covered Alps, just before all the flights got
cancelled because of the eruption of the volcano in Iceland.
It felt like home when we arrived in Switzerland again, where
the public washrooms still cost money, but they were clean and “normal” to me.
The trains were punctual, frequent and fast, and everything was a lot cleaner.
Our relatives in Neuchatel greeted us with tasty food and a round or two of
Miniature Golf. Their home was located just above Lake Neuchatel and just below
a local mountain, where the “funiculare” took us up to a viewpoint.
I experienced many beautiful views without needing much leg
work. Between the views, the people and the colors, it was truly food for the
soul as much as for the stomach. To top it up, I realized how much I enjoy using
different languages and hope to use them more often.

Thoughts on Spring
My favorite season, a time of renewal of the
old or just finding and trying out new "things",
like doing a course to learn another language,
exploring those essential oils I was always
interested in, or simply being more present
in the moment and reaching out to others.
It means getting ready for gardening, despite
the help needed, and learning more about
various computer skills in order to have more
music in my life and being able to do better
blogging.
Looking back, I have always started something
new or visited a different place or country in the Spring.
Looking back only 3 years, to April 2010, I was
walking around in Venice and the Cinque Terre,
as well as visiting France and Switzerland.
I will post about my european experience in
the Spring of 2010 on the weekend.
In the meantime, enjoy YOUR Spring and ask
yourself what YOUR renewal will look like!

A baaad day with MS
a similar day like the day before, with not too much
soreness and weakness in the legs, but it doesn't happen
like that, despite all the good intentions.
My diet is a healthy, gluten- and dairy free as well as
legume free diet, since the allergy testing over a year
ago. Some days, it feels like a blood flow issue entirely,
because I wake up sore after not moving.
I keep in mind the fact that menopause started at the
same time the symptoms worsened, and I check up on
certain issues, just to rule them out or in. Just recently,
I read an article about a lady's muscle pains happening
along with her hot flashes, and this gave me hope...
Between hormonal health and adrenal issues, I know
what I will address next, and I will stop blaming a food
or certain supplement for the soreness of my legs.
Making time for meditation and prayer is important, and
it is still a challenging task for me, but I am improving.
Music means the world to me, but with all the new
technologies, a baby boomer like myself feels a little
stranded at times.
What helps me make my days brighter when its a bad
one? My attitude of gratitude, my "kids" and pets, my
friends and family close and far, little joys and unexpected
surprises, as small as they can be.... Just being alive!
Positive thinking helps me not to be discouraged. I used
to like hiking, but now its out of the question. So I look at
what I CAN do instead: Pack up the scooter and walker with
the camera and drive places or let someone else drive me
to see the beautiful views together.
Winter seems more challenging when living with a
disability, but to me, this means more time for relaxing
and reading, spending time with the pets or learning a new
language or doing the brain games. After all, there will
definitely be a Spring around the corner!

Love your liver
All organs, glands and tissue of the body functions make a
harmonious whole, and the liver plays a major role. The Chinese call it “The
Father of all organs”.
The liver has many functions, but its main job is to
detoxify the body. We live in a toxic world these days. Chemicals used in farming,
food additives, pharmaceutical drugs, chlorination and fluoridation of water,
car exhaust and indoor pollutants from chemical cleaners, paint and carpets are
all some of the major substances contributing to our general body toxicity.
A bad diet from processed and denatured foods and alcohol put
extra stress on the liver. It has to work constantly to get rid of toxins
through the lungs, skin, kidneys and bowels so that they don’t get into the
bloodstream. So if you are having a number of health issues such as high
cholesterol, irritable bowel, high blood sugar, asthma, skin rashes or hormonal
problems, to mention a few, the real problem could stem from your liver.
The body also needs more fiber and water to absorb toxins
and flush them out. Whether you eat 3
large or 6 small meals a day, make sure all foods are nutritious, chew well and
get at least one to two bowel movements per day.
Vegetables are both cleansing and building to the liver, and
they are easiest to digest in the form of fresh juices, preferably organic.
Drink at least 8oz. of freshly pressed juice daily. It is beneficial to “chew”
your vegetable juice to stimulate the salivary glands and start the digestive
process.
Carrot, beet, spinach, celery, kale and cucumber all juice
well. Be creative and mix two or more of these vegetables and add lemon juice
or ginger for extra flavor. Try to start the day with a glass of water with a
teaspoon of lemon juice in it. Your liver loves this!
Whenever you feel sluggish, tired or achy in the morning, or
have done some overeating/overdrinking the night before, use some liver-loving
herbs as part of your diet. Milk thistle, dandelion, nettle and black radish juices
are all good liver tonics. Artichoke, a member of the thistle family,
stimulates the production and flow of bile and aids in the process of
detoxification.
When you rejuvenate your liver, you eliminate toxins,
overcome tiredness and feel more energetic. Remember that it takes at least 21
days to change a habit. Good luck!

February
This month has a number of mixed feelings for me. Valentine's Day was cute when the children were very young and we bought or created some heart shaped cards to share at school. It was all about sharing the love with everybody in class, not just the favorite classmates. The teacher was also included, and there was an abundance of chocolate or candy hearts shared, even with me.
This year, one of my daughters had a big dark chocolate heart as an unexpected surprise, my sister called and a friend dropped by after not being able to visit with me for a long time.
When I grew up in Switzerland, we didn't even celebrate it! For the past 8 years, Valentine's Day means a sad time: I lost my dad and my kids lost their dad, just within a few hours of each other.
Those memories stay forever, even if the pain
gets a little weaker with every passing year.
Its a reminder that we should live and celebrate
more like the people who live in the Now: Do
random acts of kindness and treat everyone the
way we would like to be treated - on a daily basis.
I appreciate the longer days and start planning for
the garden and maybe some short trips.
Born in the Spring, I have always enjoyed nature and
its flowers, herbs, grasses and trees.
I intend to spend more time gardening once
the raised beds are built, and I'm not even
complaining about the weather this month!
One new development in my MS life with all the
muscle pains in my legs: coconut oil. If I take it
daily at a dose of at least 2-3 tablespoons, the pain
goes away! Keeping track of every single item I
eat will help to narrow down the culprits for my
digestive system. Coconut Oil is known to be
antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antimicrobial.
"Let the food be thy medicine, and the medicine be
thy food." Our bodies are smart, but we have to
listen to them, despite our busy lives!

My Childhood
There is not one negative memory about my childhood
in Switzerland. Even though my
parents were not the average rich Swiss folks,
they made their wishes come true with hard work
and persistence in all their tasks.
Dad instilled his love for gardening, nature and
music in me. I remember the family Sunday walks
and how he made us guess the name of a certain
tree or bush to win one Swiss Franc! He constantly
reminded us to breathe in and out deeply, especially
when we were outside in the woods.
Both mom and dad had a true love for music, and
this included singing for mom and accordeon playing
for dad.
I sang songs walking around the newly built house as
early as 2 years old, then played the recorder, the
piano, and much later, the guitar and harmonica.
We were three kids, and I was the oldest. We didn't
own a television for the first few years of my life,
but we listened to the radio and the records a lot.
Doing chores on Saturdays was a routine, whether
it was helping in the garden or cleaning a small
corner of the house, or simply caring for our new
bicycles to keep them shiny and nice looking.
Mom influenced me with her joy of photography,
and she enjoyed singing while doing housework.
Hiking was our favorite pastime activity, and a few
times, we went on holidays in the mountains that
gave us unforgettable memories!
My younger brother and sister played hide and seek
with me and a few neighborhood kids outside.
We had cats, parrots and rabbits as pets.
Its the smells and sounds that I miss the most from
my childhood. The church bells ringing and the
fragrant flowers of dad's garden. I sometimes wonder,
if I would have an MS diagnosis, if I stayed in
Switzerland.....

An Attitude of Gratitude :)
I have many blessings in my life, despite the challenging pain
and inflammation that comes with Multiple Sclerosis.
I am grateful for my family, my extended family members, as
well as my friends and relatives.
On a daily basis, its those little things that make my day brighter,
even though happiness is an attitude, a choice that comes from
within.
A sunny day, a tiny baby, two elderly people holding hands as
they go for a walk, a peak at the mountains, a drive by a lake,
a friend (or daughter) bringing me something unexpected, such
as chocolate, duck eggs or flowers. Just having a good day
without leg pain is a blessing! The nights give me no problems
with sleeping, especially since I started using the Young Living
Essential Oils of Lavender as well as Peace and Calm.
Then there are the pets in the house! All three of them, a dog
and two cats, are special and healing. I grew up with cats and
had many pets all my life.
Then there is music! My Swiss family wasn't very sporty, other
than hiking, but very musical indeed.
This brings my grateful memories back to childhood and my
upbringing in Switzerland, to which I am forever thankful for
to my beautiful parents. I will chat more about my Swiss
childhood next time. For now, I am off to work for only three
hours and picking up that highly absorbable form of magnesium.

CATS AND DOGS
with lots of hair
Nose-art on the window
Come clean it if you dare
They chase and tease each other
and often get along
But if we treat them special
they know where they belong
Purring and wagging
to confirm what they like
Good food and fresh water
some treats and a hike
They know every language
no matter how strange
And if you're sad or shy
they stay close to you
and never ask why

Groundhog Day, February 2, 2013
routine of stretching and shaking with deep breathing and
heard on the morning news that Balzac Billy predicted an
early Spring. Lets hope he is right, because this is what I
have wished for!
In the sunny kitchen, I had a glass of filtered water with
lemon juice and a gluten free Greens powder (Enerex),
followed by some blueberries and gluten free rice crackers.
I am determined to find out why my legs get sore after I eat.
My diet can't get much cleaner, I only need some improvement
in the physical exercise department, which is a double challenge
with the MS pain and/or fatigue. I have a couple of MS girlfriends
who have inspired me to move those muscles or lose them.
I am considering a coach to help me, or just somebody to come
to my house and "kick butt", and I will also sign up for more
physiotherapy for my bad balance. Ever since I broke my left
ankle, my physical condition worsened. It is almost a full time
job to cover all health areas of one's life, but I have no excuse,
since I'm not working very much these days.
This week, I also learned about some extensively researched
products, namely the Nordic Naturals Fish Oil and the Life-Choice
brand vitamins and herbs. There are too many choices out there
for us all, and other than good, organic food, we need to make
sure that our supplements are helping us, not harming us!
Well, my next stop will be the shower! My circulation is another
issue to work on, and it helps to alternate hot, warm and cold water
in the shower, and always ending with cold. If I can do this, so can you.
Happy Groundhog Day!

A good day with MS
This means no sore leg and a longing to get out.
I had a tasty beet and celery smoothie this morning,
which means no pain so far!
I signed up as a distributor for Young Living Essential
Oils, and the lady who came to my house has MS, is
older than me and doing well, thanks to the oils.
This means renewed hope for me, since the CCSVI
treatment was disappointing in my specific case:
They couldn't get in the left jugular vein to balloon it!
My regular daily supplements are: probiotics, digestive
enzymes, Juice Plus, vitamin D, a well absorbable
calcium/magnesium, a pumpkin seed capsule for
bladder control, Omega 3 Barlean's Fish Oil as well
as a sublingual higher dose B12 with a B complex.
Just recently, I started taking an actual drug called
LDN (Low Dose Naltrexone), at a dose of 0.5 mg per
day. It has no side effects and good feedback from
users with other issues than MS. One website to
check out is www.ldninfo.org
It is a treat to have more daylight, and the lawn
maintenance people have already been calling.
I'm feeling Spring approaching soon :)

Monkey Mind
People, music, and so much more;
Asking myself why my legs get sore.
My thoughts are racing wild,
I wish I was a child!
Laundry, cooking and cleaning;
Doing chores, but finding meaning.
Chocolate, pasta, holey socks,
Dog walks, carwash, garbage in a box.
Come and listen to my song,
I promise not to keep you long!
Smells of nature give oxygen to my brain,
Feelings of love in my heart.....
Happiness despite the rain.
I adore you 'cause you're kind,
So please excuse my monkey mind!

Spring
Hello Spring!
Where are you wonderful thing?
I'm desperate to meet you;
To feel and to greet you....
Send your winds to sing me hello,
And your air to help me mellow.
Why are you hiding so long this year,
Just when I want you so desperately near?
I think that you are very smart,
Allowing us all a brand new start.
The birds are singing their happy song,
Surely I won't have to wait too long....
I feel divine powers in your colorful flowers,
And I know the goodness of all your showers!
Asking for you will do no harm,
So come here soon and make me warm!

Hello to you all
Thanks to the help of a friend, I am finally starting my
blog called Living with MS and keeping it natural.
Please be patient with me! I will start from the present
and go back to my past a bit, so it will be easier for you
to understand my whole situation/life with MS.
There will also be a poem category, because quite often,
it is easier for me to create a poem than to think about
the proper grammar for an article!
I will write (so I'm told) as the thoughts occur and not
worry too much about the correct grammar :)
Returning very soon,
